Wow, this has been a really cool thing that came my way! Apparently there is this thing called a Sunshine Blogger Award, and it is a bit of peer recognition for bloggers who have inspired joy and learning. I think my good friend Dale the Money Guy pressed the wrong button, because he decided to nominate me, your dear pal Captain DIY, for this great honor! Thanks Dale!
Do yourself a favor, when you’re done reading this, and go check out Dale’s site. He’s got a great blog along with the option for one on one coaching and even some great financial tools for you! I love tools!

How Does This All Work?

The rules of this are pretty simple:
  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog
  2. Answer the 11 questions you have been given
  3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and ask them 11 new questions
  4. Display the rules and Sunshine Blogger Award logo.
Ready? Here we go!

When you decided to be a blogger, what was your top reason for starting a blog?

I had always enjoyed writing, but i never really had an excuse to write. When I realized how flexible and noon-committal blogging could be if that’s what you wanted, it seemed like a great way to have an excuse to write. Once I got into the FI community I realized that I had a voice and a story to tell, and I began to really focus my narrative and hone my writing style.

As far as TV, music and movies: what show, artist, or film is your biggest guilty pleasure?

I have two genres of guilty-pleasure TV, and those are adult comics (that sounds really bad) like South Park and Big Mouth, and fighting shows. Anything with well-choreographed martial arts has my attention.

What is your favorite weekend outing?

I like anything in the woods, and I also like beer. I guess my perfect outing would be a good romp through the woods, with a little bit of moderately technical climbing and scrambling, followed by a few beers at a local brewery. Lucky for me I’m surrounded by woods and breweries!

You are given $1,000,000 to use to bless the lives of other people. You can’t use it on yourself, your family, or friends. How would you spend the money?

This is a good one! I think I would buy the largest piece of untouched land I possibly could and preserve the hell out of it. Throw a few nice trails in there, but keep it from getting too big and popular so it remains as untouched as possible for as long as possible.

Think abut your blog niche for a moment. If you had to choose another niche to write about, what would it be? Why?

I had another blog for a little while before my current one that was more focused on parenting. I like that as a topic because it almost writes itself. I mean, just follow some little kids around for a while and they do all kinds of crazy shit. It’s great!

Your eccentric friend gives you the opportunity to do some time traveling in his time machine. You can go forward or backward in time. What year would you select? Why?

This is a toss-up for me. I would either go many thousands of years into the past to see what the world looked like before we screwed it up, or many thousands of years into the future to see what becomes of us.

What are the top three blessings in your life?

First of all, I was born in the US. This is a huge blessing, in that I have been born with a strong passport into a wealthy country with incredible opportunities. Of course, the US isn’t the only country that has these qualities, it just happens to be the one I landed in.
Second of all, my parents are deep-down good people. Sure, they split up when I was young, but they are both really wonderful people who care deeply about doing what’s right for their kids. They also each married super people, so I now get to have 4 great parents! I’ll add to that my in-laws, who are just phenomenal.
Third of all, I have always been a very healthy person, generally speaking. This has allowed me to have so many other terrific blessings, such as my amazing wife and kids. Really, without health, we have nothing.

You won an all-expenses paid trip for you and your family to anywhere in the world that you haven’t already been. Where are you going?

Orlando! (Book of Mormon reference here, folks) But seriously, New Zealand looks amazing. But there’s also the canyons of Utah, the mountains of Colorado, the wilds of Alaska; there’s just so much of the world to see!

What is your favorite meal to make at home?

Not a big fan of cooking here, so I’m going with easy on this one. Hot dogs on the grill, baby! Slice up some crispy veggies and crack open a beer and you have a damn good time!

Have you ever gone skydiving? If so, how many times? If not, is it on your bucket list?

Nope, and nope. While it would be cool, I’m fairly certain I would crap my pants, which would kind of put a damper on the whole experience. I’d rather go scuba diving!

On a rainy day with nowhere to be and nothing else to do, would you read the book or watch the movie?

I really want to say read the book. I suppose it depends on the subject. If it’s a good novel, say by Kurt Vonnegut Jr or something, definitely the book. Actiony stuff though, gotta go with the movie.

Good Stuff! Who’s Next?

Ok, that’s enough of my drivel. Now it’s time for me to present my nominations for this prestigious honor! I have chosen the bloggers on this list because they have brought me joy through their blogs, podcasts, or even face-to-face! I highly recommend all of their blogs to everyone!
